Martha Rea Baker has delivered the final two paintings for the upcoming exhibit at Karan Ruhlen Gallery which opens Friday, September 25, 2015 with an artist reception from 5-7 pm.
“Conversations on Color and Abstraction”
Like the previous paintings, Dordogne I, II, and III, these abstracts posted below were inspired by travels to the French Dordogne. The artist first visited this region in 2000 on an art travel trip and returned in April of 2014 with her husband to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. This area of France is rich with history, gourmet food and wine, chateau-studded limestone cliffs and most importantly, prehistoric cave art. In the paintings posted below, Martha has captured the essence of the landscape with abstract references to the blue of the Dordogne River, grey and white limestone cliffs and shapes and symbols found in the region.

Karan Ruhlen Gallery features the work of three well-established artists to kick off the 2014 art season. The exhibition features New Mexico abstract painters, Martha Rea Baker and Kevin Tolman and California sculptor Bret Price. The group of artists is diverse in their approach to abstraction.
Santa Fean, Martha Rea Baker’s paintings deal with the concept of “time”, the passage of time and its effects on our natural world. Whether depicting chronological time, marking the sequential passage of hours, days, seasons or an ancient age glimpsed through excavation, the painting process of adding, subtracting and thoughtful editing is a metaphor for life’s timeline.
Albuquerque artist Kevin Tolman continues to produce inspiring, epic and intimate works. Some appear to be amplified organic forms, while others are cadenced arrangements of linear and geometric shapes.. He builds rich mixed-media abstractions with gestural layers of vibrant acrylic that he applies scratching, scraping and drawing along the way. Tolman’s abstract imagery creates a tension between the illusion of spatial depth and surface paint that is utterly compelling
California artist Bret Price builds heating chambers around large pieces of steel, applying intense heat to manipulate metal to create a sense of softness in his sculpture. The variables of intense heat, size and shape of the raw material produce a wide range of results with a degree of unpredictability. The show will feature his recent series composed of bands of stainless steel joined together in unexpected ways. The shaped rings and bands are welded together to form elegant abstractions in brilliant colors.
“The gallery will be truly transformed with the energy of these three well established artists,” says Ruhlen.

Martha Rea Baker has just returned from her annual “Artists With-Out Limits” painting retreat to the Texas Hill Country. During this productive studio time at the Hill Country Arts Foundation in Ingram, TX, Martha created eight new paintings.
To begin the 2014 exhibition schedule, the Hill Country Arts Foundation installed a show of paintings created during this year’s retreat or in previous years and opened the exhibit, “AWOL-Artists With-Out Limits-2014” with a reception on Saturday, January, 11. Martha created three 24″ square paintings for the show in the first four days of this year’s retreat on the theme of “Seasons”. The canvases depicting one winter and two autumn scenes are posted below.
Below you will see one of the larger canvases which Martha finished at HCAF. Karan Ruhlen has chosen this piece for the upcoming exhibit, In the Abstract, opening at Karan Ruhlen Gallery on May 23, 2014.

STUDIO TRES PICOS
Welcome to Studio Tres Picos, the studio of Martha Rea Baker in the Art Barns at Old Road Ranch near Santa Fe, New Mexico! From this site the artist will keep you informed on new work, exhibitions and events. What a joy to be painting in an area so rich in history and culture!
Martha is a visual artist creating abstract paintings in oil/cold wax, acrylic and encaustic.
With her move to Santa Fe in 2006, came an opportunity to study the art of painting with hot wax. Encaustic is an ancient medium of melted beeswax and resin, fused with heat. The luminosity, depth, and richness of color achieved by working with this process is difficult to duplicate in any other medium.

Martha has also added the process of mixing Gamblin cold wax medium with oil paint to achieve a rich textural surface. This mixture has proven excellent for expressing the passage of time and its effects on our environment.
