Martha Rea Baker has delivered the final two paintings for the upcoming exhibit at Karan Ruhlen Gallery which opens Friday, September 25, 2015 with an artist reception from 5-7 pm.

                       “Conversations on Color and Abstraction”

Like the previous paintings, Dordogne I, II, and III, these abstracts posted below were inspired by travels to the French Dordogne.  The artist first visited this region in 2000 on an art travel trip and returned in April of 2014 with her husband to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. This area of France is rich with history, gourmet food and wine, chateau-studded limestone cliffs and most importantly, prehistoric cave art. In the paintings posted below, Martha has captured the essence of the landscape with abstract references to the blue of the Dordogne River, grey and white limestone cliffs and shapes and symbols found in the region.

Once again, the first post of the new year is a report on Martha Rea Baker’s annual painting retreat in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. The Hill Country Arts Foundation in the small town of Ingram, TX is host to a group of 17 artists who each January travel from Texas, New Mexico and Tennessee to begin the new year creatively with talented artists who also happen to be dear friends. This is Martha’s tenth year of attending and next year will mark the twenty-fifth year of group which began as a wintermester art course at Collin County Community College in Plano, TX. The current group has adopted the name AWOL—-Artist Without Limits—- which describes the philosophy of these artists.

Martha Rea Baker has recently completed two oil/cold wax paintings on panel for the upcoming group show at Karan Ruhlen Gallery opening July 12, 2013. This exhibition entitled, “Surface Beauty” explores how the subtle tones and rich textured surfaces inform each artist’s approach to painting.

Night and Day----48" x 36"

Night and Day—-36″ x 48″—-SOLD

Baker states about her recent work, “My paintings continue to deal with the concept of “Time”; the passage of time and its effects on our natural world. Whether depicting chronological time, marking the sequential passage of hours, days or seasons or an ancient age glimpsed through excavation, the painting process of adding, subtracting and thoughtful editing is a metaphor for life’s timeline.

Martha Rea Baker’s paintings will be included in a group exhibit at Karan Ruhlen Gallery in Santa Fe, NM August 17-31, 2012.

THE ABSTRACT: New Mexico’s Own                                            (Featuring four artists living and working in New Mexico)

Opening Reception: Friday, August 17, 2012: 5-7 pm

Abstract art uses a visual language of form,   color and line to create a composition which exists with a degree of independence. Abstraction indicates departure from reality in depiction of imagery in art. Karan Ruhlen has selected four artists from New Mexico working in a range of media from acrylic, to oil, to encaustic. The group of artists is diverse in their approach to abstraction. Linking all of the artists are sensual painting surfaces achieved through layering processes intended to involve the viewer.
