Once again, the Hill Country Arts Foundation annual retreat provided a creative jump-start to the new year. Martha Rea Baker completed three 30″ acrylic squares inspired by a recent trip to the south of France.

“It’s not that the creative act and the critical act are simultaneous. It’s more like you blurt something out and then analyze it.” – Robert Motherwell

Motherwell’s quote describes the painting process of Santa Fe, NM artist, Martha Rea Baker. Her abstract paintings go through many stages during their creation and arrive at the finished state through the addition, subtraction and careful editing of information.

Now in its 25th year, Miniatures & More is an exhibition fundraiser that provides valuable funding to The Albuquerque Museum in New Mexico while benefiting the artists whose work it features. The only “sell” exhibition at the Albuquerque Museum, Miniatures was created by – and is a program of – The Albuquerque Museum Foundation.

A range of artists producing traditional and contemporary paintings, photographs and sculptures are selected each year through a juried process in order to provide an exceptional collection for consideration. The “& More” was added to the 2007 Miniatures exhibition. Miniatures & More 2015 features one painting each from twelve outstanding New Mexico artists.

Karan Ruhlen Gallery features the work of three well-established artists to kick off the 2014 art season. The exhibition features New Mexico abstract painters, Martha Rea Baker and Kevin Tolman and California sculptor Bret Price. The group of artists is diverse in their approach to abstraction.

Baker Price Tolman

Baker———-Price———-Tolman

Santa Fean, Martha Rea Baker’s paintings deal with the concept of “time”, the passage of time and its effects on our natural world. Whether depicting chronological time, marking the sequential passage of hours, days, seasons or an ancient age glimpsed through excavation, the painting process of adding, subtracting and thoughtful editing is a metaphor for life’s timeline.

Albuquerque artist Kevin Tolman continues to produce inspiring, epic and intimate works. Some appear to be amplified organic forms, while others are cadenced arrangements of linear and geometric shapes.. He builds rich mixed-media abstractions with gestural layers of vibrant acrylic that he applies scratching, scraping and drawing along the way. Tolman’s abstract imagery creates a tension between the illusion of spatial depth and surface paint that is utterly compelling

California artist Bret Price builds heating chambers around large pieces of steel, applying intense heat to manipulate metal to create a sense of softness in his sculpture. The variables of intense heat, size and shape of the raw material produce a wide range of results with a degree of unpredictability. The show will feature his recent series composed of bands of stainless steel joined together in unexpected ways. The shaped rings and bands are welded together to form elegant abstractions in brilliant colors.

“The gallery will be truly transformed with the energy of these three well established artists,” says Ruhlen.

Martha Rea Baker’s paintings will be included in a group exhibit at Karan Ruhlen Gallery in Santa Fe, NM August 17-31, 2012.

THE ABSTRACT: New Mexico’s Own                                            (Featuring four artists living and working in New Mexico)

Opening Reception: Friday, August 17, 2012: 5-7 pm

Abstract art uses a visual language of form,   color and line to create a composition which exists with a degree of independence. Abstraction indicates departure from reality in depiction of imagery in art. Karan Ruhlen has selected four artists from New Mexico working in a range of media from acrylic, to oil, to encaustic. The group of artists is diverse in their approach to abstraction. Linking all of the artists are sensual painting surfaces achieved through layering processes intended to involve the viewer.
