≈ Comments Off on “Surface Beauty” at Karan Ruhlen Gallery in Santa Fe
Martha Rea Baker has recently completed two oil/cold wax paintings on panel for the upcoming group show at Karan Ruhlen Gallery opening July 12, 2013. This exhibition entitled, “Surface Beauty” explores how the subtle tones and rich textured surfaces inform each artist’s approach to painting.
Baker states about her recent work, “My paintings continue to deal with the concept of “Time”; the passage of time and its effects on our natural world. Whether depicting chronological time, marking the sequential passage of hours, days or seasons or an ancient age glimpsed through excavation, the painting process of adding, subtracting and thoughtful editing is a metaphor for life’s timeline.

Martha Rea Baker started the New Year with intensive and productive studio time at the Hill Country Arts Foundation in Ingram, TX. This annual ten-day painting retreat is an opportunity to become immersed in the painting process with no distractions, thus resulting in fresh spontaneous work. Working on large-scale canvases with acrylic paint, Martha created paintings for both of her galleries, KARAN RUHLEN GALLERY in SANTA FE, NM and BROWN’S FINE ART in JACKSON, MS.
This year, the Hill Country Arts Foundation honored the artists with an exhibit of work painted during the retreat.

Martha recently delivered a major oil and cold wax painting to her Santa Fe gallery in late December. This is a long narrow format which can hang either vertically or horizontally, giving it much flexibility. The colors and textures are inspired by the cool rock and warm earth of the Southwest landscape.

Architects, William and Mark, conceived the modern take on the Northern New Mexico pitched roof farm-house, while Dave fabricated and installed the steel railing on the sunset deck.
The last page of the three-page article shows Martha working in her studio and mentions how this personal environment, designed by her sons, has inspired her art.
