HOT off the easel—Martha has recently completed a new encaustic diptych, continuing to work with the  silver metallic wax and influenced by the turquoise of the sky and the famous gemstones of the area. From the book, Turquiose Unearthed, an Illustrated Guide, we learn that, “To the native peoples of the American Southwest in particular, this “sky stone” is an ancient talisman for health and happiness, and for centuries it has been incorporated into both ceremonial and everyday jewelry, sculpture and pottery. Other cultures believe turquoise, one of the loveliest of gemstones, possesses protective powers.”

Martha recently returned from ten days of painting at the Hill Country Arts Foundation ( www.hcaf.com ) in Ingram, TX. This is Martha’s fourth year to attend this annual January painting trip with 16 fellow artists. Working with metallic acrylic paint on 12″ x 12″ x 2″ cradled panels,  Martha created  abstract works by layering many thin applications of paint. Although in a different media, the pieces are similar in style and content to Martha’s recent encaustics.

Please visit the Acrylic Collage Gallery to view more of the Alchemy series.

Plein Air Painting

The weather has turned cool in New Mexico and the cottonwoods have recently taken on a golden hue near Abiquiu in Georgia O’Keeffe country. Martha enjoyed a two-day painting trip capturing the spectacular northern New Mexico landscape in small, quick watercolor impressions. She managed to create 21 small paintings, recording the journey around Georgia’s White Place, the view of the Pedernal, El Rito, Rancho de San Juan and the Rio Chama.

What an inspirational trip! One can sense the spirit of countless artists who have traveled these roads before and cannot help but be influenced by the special light and peaceful quality of the area.

 STUDIO  TRES PICOS

Welcome to Studio  Tres Picos, the studio of  Martha Rea Baker in the Art Barns at Old Road Ranch near Santa Fe, New Mexico! From this site the artist will keep you informed on new work, exhibitions and events. What a joy to be painting in an area so rich in history and culture!

Martha is a visual artist creating abstract paintings in oil/cold wax, acrylic and encaustic.

With her move to Santa Fe in 2006, came an opportunity to study the art of painting with hot wax. Encaustic is an ancient medium of melted beeswax and resin, fused with heat. The luminosity, depth, and richness of color achieved by working with this process is difficult to duplicate in any other medium.

Martha has also added the process of mixing Gamblin cold wax medium with oil paint to achieve a rich textural surface. This mixture has proven excellent for expressing the passage of time and its effects on our environment.
