ALCHEMY SERIES
- Alchemy––— a form of chemistry and speculative philosophy practiced in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and concerned principally with discovering methods for transmuting baser metals into gold.
Artist Statement: In this new series, I am exploring the use of metallic acrylic and wax in both the acrylic and encaustic paintings. In each media, I work in many layers of wax or paint and either scrape or sand the panels to reveal the marks underneath, thus revealing the history of the painting. The paintings are about transformation and are inspired by textures and personal symbols, text, letters, words and past experiences. mrb

Dropping you a note to let you know that at this very moment, you are my favorite living Abstract Artist. The size of all your pieces are ones in which I used to love to work. The thickness of the surface come off well in reproduction. I believe at one point you mentioned that abstraction is a departure from reality. Not that it needs an excuse, but I have been grappling between realism and my need for a justification to lose all sense of representation. So happy to have found your Art.

Hello, Martha…I’m not sure you’ll remember me, but I met you on a skiing trip to Aspen back in the 80’s, and accompanied your family, another Baker family from MN and the Franks (Laurie Frank was my college roommate). Just wanted to let you know I still have your lovely watercolor you gave me from that trip, and it has hung in all 9 of our houses, including our current one in Minneapolis (it’s also been in Washington, Oregon and Wisconsin!). Wish I could find a way to send you a photo of it, but I don’t see where I can. Hope you and your family are well. I have two grown kids of my own; no significant others in their lives and no grandchildren yet.

Hi Wendy! How wonderful to see you comment this morning! I see that it was from 2009 and I have no idea if I answered you before or why it popped up this morning! Yes, I remember you and the amazing ski trip and I am delighted to learn that you still enjoy the watercolor painting. Thanks for reaching out. Martha mbakerart@ gmail.com
